Schooner Sail from Salem
Schooner Sail from Salem Welcome aboard the schooner Fame of Salem, a replica of the successful privateer from the War of 1812. The original FAME, built in Gloucester and owned in Salem, was a fast "Chebacco" fishing schooner that was reborn as a privateer when war broke out in the summer of 1812. She took at least 21 prizes before being wrecked in the Bay of Fundy in March of 1814. The new FAME is a full-scale replica of this famous schooner. Framed and planked of white oak and trunnel-fastened in the traditional manner, the new FAME was launched in 2003.
Cancellation Policy: There are no refunds. All sales are final. Change Fee Policy: If changes are allowed on a tour or activity, a $20.00 per reservation change fee will be applied for any change to a reservation. Please note that some tours and activities do not allow any changes. Date changes can be made only if we can confirm availability on the new date. While we cannot guarantee any changes can be made, all change requests must be submitted a minimum of 24 hours prior to the tour departure and must be handled on an individual basis through our Reservations Center. Aboard the new FAME, passengers learn about the fishermen, pirates, privateers, traders and men of war who shaped our North Shore. They learn about the fishing trade that prompted Cape Ann's first European settlements...the brave little schooners of George Washington's fleet...the East India trade that made Salem rich...and, of course, the privateers of the Revolution and the War of 1812. WEATHER New Englander weather forecasts have their uses but are not entirely reliable. We do not usually cancel trips based solely on the forecast. The captain decides whether or not to sail very close to departure time. Thunderstorms, thick fog, steady rain, and/or winds in excess of 25 knots may cause a trip to be cancelled. WHAT TO BRING It's cooler out on the water, so bring a sweatshirt or windbreaker. High heels or dress shoes will be uncomfortable and potentially unsafe - so we recommend sneakers, sandals, or boat shoes. Cameras, sunglasses and sunscreen are also good ideas. Snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine are sold on board, and passengers are welcome to bring their own food and soft drinks. However, coolers and alcoholic beverages may NOT be brought aboard. There is a restroom on board. It is below decks, accessed by descending a short ladder, so persons with limited mobility may wish to visit a restroom ashore before coming aboard. SEASICKNESS Seasickness is rarely a problem on beamy schooners like FAME operating in protected waters close to shore. Nobody has ever gotten sick during one of our Salem Sound cruises. However, those prone to motion sickness may wish to take some Dramamine half an hour before sailing. Hotel pick up not included. Please reserve online, or call us toll-free at 800-301-3239. ![]() |
